Learning More About Quality Play
Shortly after writing Throw Away the Script and Engage the Imagination, I received the Winter 2010 issue of the Child Life Council Bulletin. The insert, Child Life Focus, featured three articles on play by Dr. Diane E. Levin, a professor of education at Wheelock College in Boston and a founder of Teachers Resisting Unhealthy Children's Entertainment (TRUCE). Of course, I had to "drop everything" and read all three articles. Imagine my joy in not only finding a kindred spirit but also gaining further insights into quality play and its essential role in childhood learning. Child Life Council has given permission for us to reprint TRUCE Guide on Infant & Toddler Play, Toys & Media, and we've begun doing so, in installments, on our blog. Come, explore: What is Different About Play Today? Why Is Quality Play So Important? What Types of Toys Support Healthy Play? Levin offers play recommendations for infants (birth through 12 months) and toddlers (12 through 36 months) and provides additional information and resources for more in-depth study. We invite you to read the case TRUCE makes and share your insights with us through comments on our blog. Whether you agree or disagree, we'd like to know what you think. Visit our blog and leave a comment. You could receive a coupon good for $5 off your next order of $10 or more. |
